When faced with making decisions, the bottom line is you need to look inside your heart, listen to your gut, and go with the first thing it tells you. You can’t rationalize with it, you can’t negotiate with it. It’s your instinct, and it’s always right.
For many of us though, listening to our true selves is a practice we’re still perfecting. What then?
Here are some ways to tap into your all-knowing self. (Spoiler: You already have the answers!)
And, trying these actions can help to really hone in what to do next time you’re faced with making decisions:
- Nature. Go anywhere and for as long as you can. Your brain literally rewires itself and produces less harmful stress hormones when outdoors for enough time.
- Meditation. This doesn’t need to be done in a cross-legged seated position. Get in whatever form your body likes. Mine loves to lay flat with an airline pillow behind my head. Try a meditation app or listen to soft piano for even 10 minutes to notice a big difference.
- Make a List. Breaking down your tasks and prioritizing the big things can really help you get unstuck in your mind (and in your day).
- Self-Care. Take a bath and use all the soaps and lotions you have. Do your nails. Pluck your eyebrows. Do anything that helps you focus on something else and makes your body feel better.
- Dogs. Need we say more? If you don’t have one, go to the local shelter for a cuddle.
- Journal. Tried and true. Write down the pros and cons of the situation. Draw a picture of the situation and burn it. Freestyle write whatever some to your head. While all different methods of journaling, any way you express yourself on the paper will help.
- Ask for help. If the situation is about leaving your partner, divorce, parenting, mental health issues, leaving your career, starting a business, or any of the major issues we all face in life, counseling helps. It’s a confidential and judgment-free zone to work on anything heavy in your life. We’re here for you.
Making decisions isn’t easy.
In its very essence, you have to leave one thing in favor of another. You might even hurt feelings no matter which way you choose. There is also the fear of the unknown from making one decision and leaving behind another. Making decisions is complex.
I challenge you to try the steps above. Taking each step will guide you closer to your true self by acknowledging your physical and emotional health. Your intuition will appear the closer you are to that happy place of wellness. Where you are honoring yourself for everything you are and face each day bravely. You are strong!
