Ahhhh, spring in Denver: 70 degrees one day… snowing the next. As the buds on the trees were just beginning to bloom tiny buds this week, snow is now falling today, coating them with a soft cover of white. I always feel a bit sad for the budding trees and plants around this time of year, all trying so hard to burst forth into fruition – only to get whacked with cold weather and falling snow!
Feels a lot like life, right? Sometimes it seems that right when we start to bloom or blossom in one area, something comes and whacks us back on to the cold, hard ground. We might be FINALLY making progress in our career- only the have someone else snag the promotion we wanted. Or perhaps the heaviness of winter and darkness slowly starts to lift with the longer days and sunlight returning; only for us to find ourselves still struggling more than we thought we would with feeling blah and low and icky. Or maybe the relationship we were SO excited about suddenly comes to fizzle, and we’re left feeling lost and confused about what happened.
As women, we’re hard on ourselves. SO HARD. We expect so much more of ourselves than we expect of others, and when will fail to meet the incredibly high standard we’ve set for ourselves – and NOW goddammit! – we feel like we’re somehow failing. Not keeping up. Not living our best life.
Progress, like most things, is full of fits and starts. We seem to more naturally accept and allow this for OTHER people – but for ourselves? It sounds more like this: “I should be over this by now!” Or “What’s wrong with me that I can’t get this one part of my life figured out?”
If you’re a Denver woman struggling with overwhelm, self-esteem, or anxiety around where you think you SHOULD be in life, it can be lonely and exhausting trying to figure it all out. This is where those of us at Root Counseling LOVE to step in and get you moving in the direction you want to go. While there are many ways we can support, one of our absolute favorites is something called EMDR counseling. It’s a really amazing, really well-researched type of therapy that can massively help you get unstuck from old patterns and moving more into the life, career and relationships you desire.
We’ve been providing EMDR therapy to our beautiful clients for years and have seen the incredible power it has to shift us into forward movement, when all we’ve been feeling is stuck in the fits and starts.
