When We’re Just Not Feeling It

I was sitting with a friend earlier this week, sharing with each other about our lives over coffee. At one point during our conversation, she looked at me and said, “I feel like I have it all. A good marriage, a nice home, a beautiful daughter, and career I don’t hate. And yet…it seems that increasingly, over the last few years, I just been feeling more and ‘blah.’ More beige. What the hell is wrong with me? I should be so happy, and I’m not. I feel so ungrateful.”

I smiled, touched my friend’s hand and nodded that yes, I absolutely understand. She and I live very different lives currently, but I definitely know that feeling of I “should” feel happy, based on what’s happening in my life…yet, I don’t. Sometimes the times in our lives where we “should” feel the most happy are actually some of the most stressful – for example, moving to take a new job may be exciting, but achingly lonely. Marrying our love is thrilling, and immensely stressful. Having a baby is a joy, and utterly exhausting. I hear this struggle expressed by clients on my couch every single week. It’s taught me that no matter how perfect or put-together people might look on the outside, on the inside, we’re all fighting some kind of personal battle. Most of us are actually fighting many. And having our external “ducks” in a row does NOT equal happiness.

Women in particular are prone to these bouts of low self-esteem, and often during those times of transition. This is where focused, professional women’s counseling sets itself apart from your average counseling. Women’s issues are unique to women, and require certain training and expertise to navigate well. At Root Counseling, we deeply value tailoring our work to the specific needs of women, especially counseling them through times of transition when they may feel like their whole world is getting flipped upside down.

If you find yourself feeling “blah” even though you feel like you “have it all,” women’s counseling can help you get your groove back. Give us a call at (720) 363-9188, or Book Online Here! We’d love to come alongside you to help you find the fulfillment you’re looking for.
