Playing Big, vs Playing Small

Earlier this week I was sitting with a friend at one of my favorite Denver coffee shops – the adorable and delightful Weathervane Cafe in Uptown – discussing her next career move. She was telling me how for much of her life, she’s been playing “small.” Taking just enough risks to get her just a tiny bit closer to where she really wants to be. Baby steps. One step at a time steps.

As we chatted over our lattes, we both reminisced on how much self-esteem comes in to play when we’re making life decisions, from the tiniest decision to the biggest. Low self-esteem, among other things, makes us stay small. It says to us, in the glorious words of Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”

Most of us believe, in one way or another, that we aren’t good enough. We don’t have what it takes to do the BIG thing, to dream big, to live BIGGER than we ever have before. We say we’re inadequate. And we may indeed feel that way, especially if we’re struggling with depression or anxiety. But as a trained Denver women’s counselor with over 12 years of experience, I can tell you that Williamson’s words ring true for most women I counsel. When we start really digging deep, a lot of us know that we have something incredible to offer the world. But we’re terrified of living in to it. What will the world ask of me, if I take up space with my brilliance? My talent? If I get bigger instead of smaller? If I stop trying to shrink myself so as not to offend anyone?

Sistafriends. It’s time to get bigger. We’ve been living small long enough. Women’s counseling around self-esteem issues can be an enormous help when we’re ready to reach out for that next bright star. At Root Counseling, we’re here to cheer you on all the way to you living BIG. We’d love to come alongside you and help guide you out of smallness!
